Welcome to Aquarius Counselling

I believe that every person has the strength and resiliency to carry them through the waves of pain, trauma, and unhealthy thoughts to get them to a place of healing and belief in themselves.

My approach

My work is grounded in a mindful, collaborative and values-based partnership with you, my client. I believe that you are inherently the expert of your own life. Using a trauma-informed and integrative approach, I start from where you are at, placing emphasis on your thoughts and sensations in the present moment. Together, we will explore these at a deeper level to gain understanding and insight, and find the tools that will enable your own personal growth and rediscover your strength and identity.

The impact of any perceived trauma on a person’s suffering and how they can cope can manifest in many negative ways. Anxiety, depression, loss of self-worth, hopelessness, and an inability to care for oneself emotionally and psychologically are common issues, and a person may be easily triggered, become reactive, or shut down completely.  This in turn can impact their personal and professional relationships.

To pursue a life of calmness requires all our inner strength, our courage, commitment to self and the spirit of championing change. I am committed to walking alongside you during this journey in a dignified, safe, respectful and confidential environment.

Specialties

  • Domestic Violence

I guide individuals through the stages of grief and loss in violent relationships and provide education around the cycle of violence and the impacts on your physical and emotional well-being. I also help develop safety plans and provide information on protection orders, custody and access, and more.

  • Trauma

There are many ways that trauma can affect you, and I support clients with an understanding of how trauma can impact their life and relationships. This can include loss of a family member or loved one, sexual, physical, mental or emotional abuse, bullying in the workplace, victims of crime, and more.

  • Anxiety

By identifying anxiety triggers, thoughts or emotions we can break them down into manageable pieces and work through them. Through a cognitive behavioural approach, I will provide you with the tools to help lower your anxiety and help you manage challenging situations.

  • Grief + Loss

Losing a loved one is one of life’s biggest challenges. Painful emotions can impact your life physically, mentally, spiritually and financially. For families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and men, the pain is even greater when a loved one is still missing. Through a trauma-informed lens, I will support you on your journey to healing.

About me

Hello, and nice to meet you!

I am a Sto:lo woman from the Tzeachten First Nation in Chilliwack, B.C. and currently a guest on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatoon, SK.  Unfortunately, I was not raised in my community and experienced the loss of my family traditions, ceremonies, and language and a loss of my own identity. I have made a conscious choice to not let this be my narrative, however, and have spent the last decade becoming reacquainted with my own history and people.

As a woman, I have firsthand experience with the impact of intergenerational trauma on ones’ life – my mother was a residential school survivor and I, myself, am a survivor of intimate partner violence. I use these experiences to guide my work and focus on the strength that lives within us all to get through various types of trauma.

My experience

Throughout my career I have been honoured to work alongside many great teachers, Elders, and co-workers.  I have extensive frontline experience in the community working with persons living vulnerable lifestyles, families struggling to maintain their family unit against incredible odds, victims of intimate partner violence, and male and female youth who have found themselves involved in various stages of the criminal justice system.

For 11½ years I worked with Saskatoon Domestic Violence Courts supporting survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) and providing them with an understanding of the cycle and impact of IPV on themselves, their children, and their personal and professional lives.

As a case support worker for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) I was honoured to provide emotional support to survivors and family members by assisting with their development of a care plan to move through their grief and loss in a culturally appropriate manner. Being a part of this monumental and historical Inquiry provided many opportunities to learn, experience, and participate in a variety of cultural protocols across Canada.  Being at the front of hearings enhanced my ability to build relationships with various families in a trauma-informed manner.  Hearing the truths shared by family members and offering support to them afterwards provided me with a unique insight into the needs and challenges around recovery and reconciliation.
